Final volume of the Proceedings of ICM 2006

I recently received the final volume of the Proceedings of ICM 2006. It’s on my work desk, open at the discussion of Grigory Perelman’s work on the Poincare conjecture. It’s very nice to be able to peruse it at work and very different to my work.

  1. Ted says:

I find the story fascinating. Poincare talking about the joy of comprehension being the reward for the researcher and Perelman rejecting the prize and exposure.

  2. Sacha says:

Yes, John Ball said that he had pleaded with Perelman to accept the prize, but Perelman apparently said that solving the problem was a prize enough.

  3. Caz says:

I thought it was all rather poignant and wanted to give him a very big hug, as well as a very big prize.

    Extraordinary man.
